Here’s What Your Bedroom Reveals About Your Relationship
Living with a partner? A relationship therapist uncovers clues in the contents of your bedroom.
The transition from living solo, or at home with family to a shared space with a partner(s) is always an interesting one. From balancing misaligning schedules, to learning how to navigate living together without compromising the intimacy and strength of the relationship, the journey of living with that special someone(s) is an unforgettable one.
One of the many pros that come with moving in with a significant other(s) is getting to adorn your new shared space with a collection of things and styles cherished by the different parties. Where one prefers maximalism, another might lean toward Scandi minimalism, and through your shared experience of living together, you’ll hopefully find a balance which caters to all personal preferences, resulting in a space that reflects your relationship.
When it comes to arguably the most intimate room in the house, the bedroom can often be a good indicator of one’s personality, style, and creative flair. So stepping into a bedroom shared by those in a relationship, can reveal how they choose to spend their time, what they value, and how they operate as a union.
We spoke with psychosexual and relationship therapist and qualified social worker Imogen Todd to find out what different bedroom types might reveal about a relationship, read on to find the style that best describes yours.
1. Playfully cluttered
“If you and your partner(s) have a cluttered bedroom, congrats! You are likely a creative and playful duo that thrives in chaos. It's likely that you lead busy lives, so embrace the mess, but ensure you're bringing your love for creativity and playfulness into your relationship,” said Imogen. Remember, a cluttered bedroom isn't necessarily an unkept one. If you're keen to achieve this kind of look, try filling the space with prints, plants, and different colours to spruce up the space.
2. Plant-filled
Adventurous relationships are often fans of adorning their space with natural treasures, such as shells, plants, and crystals. “If you and your partner(s) are nurturing and love spending quality time together outdoors, your bedroom is likely filled with plants! Embrace your caring side, it could mean your relationship is likely to be reciprocal and fulfilling!”
3. Warm neutral colour palette
“A warm neutral colour palette may suggest a relationship that enjoys simplicity and stability. It's easy for you and your partner(s) to fall into a routine with your need for stability sometimes getting in the way of your desire for spontaneity and fun. Your bedroom may be cosy, but don't forget to switch things up from time to time!”
4. Light and bright
“If you and your partner(s) love your bedroom bright and filled with natural light, congratulations! You and your partner(s) are likely optimistic and enjoy quality time spent together outdoors," said Imogen. Light and bright bedrooms often lead to early morning wake-ups and productive days as well, which will allow you to make the most of each new day together.
5. Book-filled
“Are you and your partner(s) great communicators and share the value of curiosity? If so, your bedroom is likely filled with books! You often spend time reading and learning together. Use your love for books to expand and act on your own relationship fantasies!”
6. Packed with personal treasures
“A bedroom filled with personal items such as pictures and artworks is a tell-tale sign of a sentimental relationship. You have respect for one another's individual identity and enjoy having meaningful conversations that connect you," said Imogen. Finding a balance of personal mementos can sometimes be hard to master, but once you've found it your room will be a harmonious reflection of your lives and interests.
7. Cool colour palette
Cooler hues such as Mineral, Coast, Sage, and Wildflower instantly imbue a sense of tranquility into your space. “If your bedroom has a cool colour palette, this might suggest you and your partner(s) love to relax and are reserved. Embrace your calm nature, but don't be afraid to spice things up a little!”
8. Colourful
Bold, bright, and beautiful bedrooms often match the people they belong to. “If your bedroom is colourful, you and your partner(s) are likely adventurous and fun! Your value for spontaneity and energetic nature keep your relationship interesting and exciting. There's never a dull moment with you!”
9. Tidy and minimalist
“If your bedroom is tidy and minimalist, you and your partner(s) are likely quite predictable and have a solid shared routine. Your value for order and simplicity may sometimes get in the way of intimacy. Don't be afraid to add intimacy to your schedule!”
10. Linen comforts
It's important to fill a bedroom with comforting materials such as plush cushions and soft linen, to lull you into a dream state. “If you and your partner(s) have a bed with all the linen comforts, congratulations! You love to splurge on the finer things in life and value a space that makes you feel comfortable and stylish.”
