How To Nail The Mediterranean Minimalist Look At Home

The cluster of seaside nations that cling to the Mediterranean have long been considered the go-to for a slice of sunny paradise and an unforgettable culture that sticks with you long after your returning flight lands. From Morrocco to Spain and every place in between, we've been seeing a huge influx of Med-inspired interiors filtering in through boutique retail fit-outs, the hottest new restaurants and of course, enviable homes. If you couldn't tell by last week's story on this jaw-dropping Tel Aviv hotel, we're pretty smitten with this new wave of design that fuses a tactile nature with clean lines to produce an aesthetic that we're predicting as the new Scandi. If you're going to recreate this look at home (we suggest you do) then follow these simple tips to nail the Mediterannean minimalist vibe at your place.

Start with stone
The foundations of this interior design style are what gives it the distinctive look and feel we've come to love. For starters, floors are covered in beautiful natural stone, whether it's slabs of travertine or rows of terracotta tiles. Not only does it serve as a striking and unique feature, the cool sensation underfoot will transport you to Mykonos instantly.

Add in some curves
Whether you love them or hate them, we're here to tell you that arches and curves are here to stay. This popular trend softens down doorways and entrances and gives them a very European treatment that's both casual and sleek. These small details are what will give your place a sense of the Mediterranean, so consider free-flowing shapes in your decor as well.

Choose a warm palette
We've already mentioned terracotta, but it's a great reference point to jump-start your interior palette when decorating. The burnt orange colour is possibly the most popular tone right now and can be replicated in leather, velvet and even linen (here's our version). Opting for warmer hues will help to achieve that sun-drenched villa vibe we're all after.

Keep lines clean
The trick to this look is to maintain a modern edge that makes your home feel comfortable and contemporary. Pay attention to details like chair legs, for example. Simple lines work best to counteract the textures and abundant colour you'll be infusing into your scheme. This style is all about balance.

Opt for woven textures
Just when you thought the rattan furniture craze had reached its peak, this Euro decorating trend has reignited the flame. Besides furniture, look for pieces such as natural wall hangings and jute rugs that put a twist on the predictable. A connection to natural materials and handcrafted pieces is key to a Mediterranean minimalist home.

Use vintage finds
This design trend is anything but generic, instead leaning more towards personal expression and artisanal crafts. To finish off a room, consider scouring your local vintage market or one of these Instagram sellers to find hidden gems that come with their own rich history.
