The 7 Biggest Interiors Trends You'll See Everywhere This Summer

It seems strange to be thinking about summer already, but hey, that’s the headspace we’re in right now. Even though it’s only part way through the year, we’re thinking ahead to the warmer months in the southern hemisphere, and are thinking positively about all the joy they can bring.

What will be the big interiors trends for our summer of 2021 and 2022? Read on to find out.

7 Biggest Interior Trends For Summer

1. Coconut Girl at Home

Have you heard of coconut girl? It’s a term coined for the fashion trend this northern hemisphere summer for beachy, relaxed vibes in clothing: think colourful Hawaiian shirts, shell necklaces, crochet everything and the colours yellow, orange, pink and blue. Well, you’re definitely going to see this carried through into homewares.

That bright, sun-kissed warm colour palette will be seen in your interior spaces, too try pairing Bed Threads Turmeric sheets with Pink Clay for maximum vibes and just like the fashion trend, you can add crochet or shell accents to your decoration to achieve this look. Big shells work well as centrepieces in your living or dining room, and why not look for a crochet throw blanket or pillow cases for the sofa?

2. Let the Light in

Sunlight for summer? Groundbreaking. And yet we’re fully on board with this design trend, which involves amplifying and using natural light at home as best as possible by adding gauze curtains to your windows.

If you’re lucky enough to have big glass doors or floor to ceiling windows, a length of light gauze curtain will help your home feel that much bigger, and will filter in warm, soothing light all day long. If you want to make sure that you have added protection for the winter months, you can double up with a second, thicker blind that you keep open all summer long and draw when the weather gets cold.

3. Keep it Natural

For a while now, natural furniture finishes such as rattan, bamboo, wicker and cane have all been popular interior trends. This summer, they’ll be sticking around and joined by natural wood, too, as a return to warm, unvarnished finishes takes over homes. Vintage is best here: you want it to feel completely lived-in and light, so seek out pre-loved pieces where possible.

4. Your New Colour Palette

This summer, you’re going to want to go for the following colours, which tie in perfectly with that coconut girl theme. Light, bright sky blue. Warm yellows of all tones, whether sweet and buttery or rich, mustard-y marigold. Reds and oranges to mimic sunsets and sunrises. And hits of minty green, pale pinks and soft purples. This is a big colour palette, we know, but hey this summer is all about more is more, and living life out loud and in living colour.

Let minimalism have a few months off and lean into it. The easiest way to add a bit of colour to your home is in Bed Threads linen sheets have a look at our Lilac and Peach colours for inspiration or in small decoration accents, such as throw pillows, placemats and napkins on your dinner table, or styling pieces such as vases and dishes.

5. Tablescaping

We’ve been all about the tablescaping for a while here at Bed Threads, and this summer we’ll be embracing it even more. (And hopefully, it will coincide with a return to at-home entertaining for the Australian cities currently in lockdown.)

Invest in good quality linen tablecloths, napkins and placements we like mixing and matching from our Bed Threads offering, even throwing in some of the scalloped edged varieties to keep things fresh to help map out a dining area in your home to help set the scene for whatever meal you’re serving: shared lunches, a decadent Sunday brunch, afternoon grazing platters or a long dinner. Tablescaping is celebratory, inclusive and, above all, fun. And haven’t we missed that!

6. Up Your Cocktail Game

If you haven’t created your own at-home bar area yet, what are you waiting for? This summer will be about perfecting your drinks and cocktail game, and for that you’ll need a well-stocked drinks cabinet. Scour vintage stores for an antique one and then start accumulating your gear.

We love a mix-and-match vibe of vintage glasses, an assortment of glass straws, handmade coasters and cocktail shakers and, of course, the piece de resistance: a few bottles of your favourite spirits. Once you start working on your cocktail game, you’ll never look back.

7. All Checks All the Time

Checks have become a bit of a thing recently, and this summer they’re not going anywhere. There are a myriad of ways you can achieve this at home, both big and small. If you’re feeling fancy, what about a check rug? Our friends at Curated Spaces in Melbourne have some that they make themselves.

There’s also check check oven mitts from Holiday the Label for keeping by the stove. You can also invest in some showstopper check ceramics, such as the gorgeous fruit bowls or serving platters from Byron Bay’s Soft Edge Studio. The world is your (checked) oyster!
