What May's Rare Super Flower Blood Moon Means for You, According to an Astrologer
Prepare yourself for a rare cosmic phenomenon. For the first time in two years, stargazers from parts of the world will be treated to a Super Flower Blood Moon on May 26.
This is no ordinary full moon and it’s different from the supermoon that rose in April 2021. May’s moon will occur when a total lunar eclipse takes place at the same time the moon is in perigee - the closest point to Earth in its orbit. So, that’s two astrological events occurring at the same time.
Here’s everything you need to know about May’s Super Flower Blood Moon and what’s in store for you when it occurs in May 2021.
What day is the full moon in May 2021?
The super flower blood moon will rise on the night of Wednesday, May 26 from around 6.47pm AEST. Over several hours, the moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, causing it to darken and become a reddish colour for a short 14 minutes. The eclipse takes place a few hours after the moon reaches perigee, the closest point to Earth on its orbit.
The eastern two-thirds of Australia will see the entire eclipse. The partial phase starts at 7.44pm AEST and the total phase at 9.11pm AEST. The eclipse will end at 9.25pm AEST and the umbral phase at 10.52pm AEST.
The entire umbra phase of the eclipse will be visible from the below cities:
- Tokyo, Japan
- Sydney, Australia
- Auckland, New Zealand
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Anchorage, Alaska
- San Francisco, California
What is a total lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, blocking the sun’s light and giving the moon a reddish hue (hence the term “blood moon”). Unlike a solar eclipse, it’s safe to look directly at the moon with a naked eye.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when the full moon coexists with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit. Supermoons make the moon appear brighter and closer than normal.
What is a Super Flower Blood Moon?
A Super Flower Blood Moon occurs when a supermoon coincides with a luna eclipse. The last time this occurred was on January 21, 2019. The red colour comes from sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere and sunsets happening around the planet at that given time.
What does May 2021’s Super Flower Blood Moon mean?
According to astrologer Natasha Weber, this event signals the perfect time to make changes to your life.
“Astrologically, any supermoon serves to amplify the effects of the sign that it’s in,” Weber tells Bed Threads Journal. “So, in this case, the super moon is highlighting the eclipse in Sagittarius’ message and that is, it's time to change your beliefs based on new intel.”
Remember, every belief, including those about yourself, is learnt and conditioned through experience. Start with small actions and build consistency to make these beliefs stick.
This moon presents a great time to reconnect with distant friends and family, try new hobbies, release any emotions holding you back and take time to gather and reflect on any negative thoughts.
“When two of the cosmos’ VIPs collaborate, it’s wise to sit up and take notice,” Weber adds. “This full super moon lunar eclipse is prompting you to change how you think about things, from the moment an idea or information captures your attention, to what you do and how you act equipped with that new knowledge.”
Ask yourself questions like ‘Am I being true to my values?’, ‘What areas of my life need more attention?’, ‘If I achieved my goals, how would I feel?’ and ‘What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?’.
And most importantly, make sure to look up at the sky to spot this rare cosmic event.
