9 Interior Design Trends for Summer 2023
Say hello to ‘Nonna-chic’ and veggie tablescapes.
Summer – the season of sun, fun and slightly frivolous trends – is finally here. Since the start of the year, subtle changes in how we live and decorate have been bubbling away, and now is the moment to live them out IRL. Italian grandma-inspired dining and a full fledged bar in your garden? There’s no other time of year you’d get away with that!
Keep reading to find out what’s trending right now…
1. Five-a-day tablescapes
Well, this one’s easy: simply root around your refrigerator’s veggie drawer for a fun twist on table decor. Anything from the nightshade family (that’s tomatoes, aubergines, and bell peppers) can be arranged into failsafe clusters around your table. Or what about carrots, piled-up Jenga-style? Less high-maintenance than flowers, they’re edible and reusable, too!
2. Potting shed goals
Even if you don’t have an actual space to designate as a potting shed, stay with us on this one. The next level of green-fingered pursuits is celebrating all the paraphernalia associated with it: cue a photogenic leaf spritzer, a beautiful trowel and a set of well-loved gardening gloves hanging from a hook, artfully arranged with trailing plants from a corner of the kitchen, or in a light-filled porch.
3. Anything unapologetically pink
Blame this one on the much-anticipated Barbie film spawning the ‘Barbiecore’ trend. Giving you carte blanche to inject your home with the most hyper shades of pink you can find, our Pink Clay Bedding Set leans into the playful vibe while still exuding a sense of sophistication.
4. Counter skirts
Got an ugly white dishwasher ruining your kitchen’s vibe? Throw a counter ‘skirt’ over it. This traditional alternative approach to cabinetry is enjoying a comeback, all you need over the course of an evening is some fabric, access to a sewing machine (or a deft hand), a tension rod, and a YouTube tutorial. A renter-friendly move for disguising ugly sink pedestals too, prepare to want to apply a skirt to everything.
5. Nonna chic
This season, the aesthetic to channel is the warmth and comfort of the home of the Italian matriarch. Whether that’s thrifted plates with hand painted motifs, ceramic jugs or generous sharing platters, the look is homely, nostalgic and not centred around perfection. A bowl of homemade pasta and lemons with everything is non-negotiable.
6. Asymmetric colour explosions
RIP the feature wall – now it’s all about bursts of colour in unexpected places. Rip up the rule-book and experiment with overlapping blocks or painting a segment of a door which intentionally bleeds onto a wall. A great way to use up sample pots or leftover paint, you’ll need a trusted roll of masking tape for this.
7. Plinths
Borrowing from the masters of display – AKA the art gallery – solid pedestals and plinths are trending. Not to be stacked with magazines and mugs, these are a considered way to show off your newest ceramic/sculpture/plant baby. Rotate your display monthly, and if you get the plinth bug, play around with adding different heights to your collection.
8. The garden bar
A 143% increase in Google searches for ‘garden bar ideas’ suggests a pitcher of lukewarm water on a side table isn’t quite going to cut it anymore. As we seek to make our homes into more experiential entertaining spaces, it’s time to go all out on the glassware, and treat yourself to an outdoor fridge to create cocktails in your backyard.
9. Stainless steel
The go-to for industrial kitchens is having a moment in more domesticated settings. Pretty much indestructible (just ask anyone with a marble worktop how they feel about spilling spices) – those working on a kitchen renovation can weave it in via a sink, countertop or cupboard front. Just remember a slick of baby oil to keep it looking shiny.
