The content creator shares how she made the most of her petite abode.

Figuring out how to decorate a studio apartment comes with plenty of design challenges. Working out how to fit a living room, kitchen, and bedroom into one space without feeling cramped and also make it look beautiful is no mean feat.

And while it might require a bit more ingenuity, planning, and editing, when done right, a studio apartment can be a functional and chic space to live in.

One person who has done a great job at decorating their studio apartment is content creator Polina Meshkova. We turned to her to share the décor essentials that make her home stylish, practical, and that little bit more special.

1. Aesthetic items that expand your storage space

Because studio apartments are small, they almost always lack storage space. For this reason, opting for pieces that provide storage and double as a statement piece is a smart choice.

"For me, it’s my media console in the living room, a case of shelves for shoes and bags, a two-layer rack in the hallway, a bedside table, and floating shelves in the kitchen. My studio is relatively spacious for a studio but nonetheless, it is great to add items that are beautiful AND can fit a lot of things, adding more storage while keeping it tidy."

2. Quality linen sheets

Being selective with the fabrics in your apartment is a good way to elevate the look and feel throughout. Given your bed won't be tucked away, opting for nice linen sheets is one way to give it a more stylish feel.

"I love colour mixing and matching my linen sets depending on the season, my mood or the mood I want to set in my apartment. They can definitely add character to the overall interior design, especially since in studios your bed is in your living space and you have to look at it more than you would at a one-bedroom for example."

3. A multi-purpose table

Multifunctional furniture is a fantastic space-saving solution to maximise your living space.

"I opted for a dining table that works well as a workspace/desk as well vs getting a small table and a desk. So I can work at that table, and have all my notebooks, planners, etc., but if I have to set it up and have people over, all it takes is moving a couple of things out of the way and setting it with the table cloth and some placemats and napkins."

Add some design flair to your small home.

4. Art

Art has a unique ability to set the tone of a space and inject it with a major dose of personality.

"Studios are on the smaller side, so there’s not that much room to give them character and personality and this is where art comes in. I recently made my own textured plaster painting that turned out very nice and I have two prints from Bed Threads hanging above my bed."

5. Vases and smaller décor objects

Sometimes it's the little things that really elevate a home and having some art d'objet that ties your larger pieces together and that you cherish will transform an ordinary apartment into something more impressive.

"I love a good vase because I love having fresh flowers on my table or on my bedside table. Uniquely shaped candles, candelabras, or colourful coffee table books are also great."

6. A rug

Rugs can help make a statement or define a zone in a home. They help anchor a space and transform a somewhat bland area into something special.

"While I do love exposed hardwood floors, I also like for my apartment to feel cosy, especially during the colder season and a wool rug with the right pattern and colour can also visually expand the space."
