How to Use the 369 Manifestation Method to Boost Your Energy, According to TikTok

We all know TikTok is the home to a wealth of helpful information, entertainment and inspiration. From beauty hacks to genius cleaning tips and sleep tricks, it's no wonder one can spend hours (and hours) on the social media platform.

But it's also become a hub for helpful mental health advice, namely the 369 manifestation method.

At the time of writing, the #369method hashtag has surpassed 169 million views on TikTok, but what actually is it, why is everyone so obsessed with it and how does it work? We asked Lysn psychologist Nancy Sokarno to reveal everything you need to know about TikTok's most popular manifestation trick.

What is the 369 manifestation method?

Although it's now garnered popularity on TikTok, Sokarno notes the concept was originally inspired by scientist Nikola Tesla.

"Known for his contribution to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system, he was also known for his spiritual enlightenment and noted the numbers 3, 6 and 9 as being ‘divine numbers’", Sokarno explains.

In fact, he was quoted saying: “If you knew the magnificence of the numbers 3, 6 and 9, you have the key to the universe”.

It was then brought to public attention by Karen Yee, an expert on the Law of Attraction methodology.

Now TikTok users are claiming the method is the key to bringing in money, new relationships, new job opportunities and pay rises.

"The idea is to set clear intentions about what you want, put your attention on the things you desire and attract them into your universe using the power of numerology," Sokarno explains.

Essentially, the 369 method highlights the belief that certain numbers have powers, which can "supercharge" the manifestation process.

"Manifesting is the notion that we can turn an idea into reality through our thoughts, intentions, beliefs, and general mindset. The idea is that we focus on things we desire and can attract them through what we think, say and do," Sokarno says.

If there's any Gen X or older millennials out there, the 369 method isn't too dissimilar to The Secret, which was a popular technique in the 2010s, based on the Law of Attraction.

Does the 369 method actually work?

A pay rise? Good luck? Blossoming relationships? Who doesn't want this? But is it too good to be true?

According to Sokarno, it's important to be wary of methods like this because it's not backed by science.

In saying this, she does advise it's not a technique you should completely write off.

"I would liken this technique to what is known as a self-fulfilling prophecy whereby we have an expectation about our future that manifests itself because we believe it will, and our resulting behaviours align to fulfill the belief," she says.

"For example, if one of your 369 methods is saving $1,000 in three months, your attitude and actions might make your prediction come true. You're more likely to be mindful about your spending habits and will start placing an emphasis on saving during this time. You’re going to naturally lean towards choosing an option that's going to allow you to save, such as buying a home brand at the supermarket or ignoring an impulse to buy that new dress."

Plus, it counts as a valuable process of trying to train your brain into believing what you’re saying and stopping that negative inner voice.

"It can help for people who have a negative disposition or a low self-image where they can try and turn it around by continually re-affirming positive statements to themselves."

She adds: "The 369 method can involve a lot of positive thinking, goal-setting and manifestation to bring what we want into our lives. The technique aligns itself to the tactic of positive affirmations, which is a popular technique sometimes used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This focuses on replacing a person’s existing thoughts that may be untrue and detrimental to their own mental health, with thoughts that positively affirm one’s self-worth."

How does the 369 method work?

Ok, so now you're up-to-date with the method, how does it even work?

Essentially, it's a manifestation technique that suggests you write down your desires in a sequence of 3, 6 and 9. However, it's easier said than done.

"Although it can sound like a simple thing to do, the trick is to focus your mind on these things while you’re writing them, imagine them happening and giving positive energy to those thoughts", Sokarno explains. "You don’t have to think about how it will happen; just imagine it happening."

Here, Sokarno breaks it down into four easy to follow steps:

1. Pick a goal, desire or dream

The first step in the 369 method is to pick up a goal, desire or dream that you want to come true in your life. While you can work on multiple desires at once, it can be better to start with just one and be specific, not vague.

2. Write your desire/s down in the morning

"The second step is the process of writing these desires down in the morning. The method suggests writing them down three times a day - morning, afternoon and night, for a period of 45 days. In the morning, you should write down your desires three times. Ideally, you would do this in a journal dedicated to the process and keep it close by so you keep up the practice."

3. Write it again at noon

"The third step is writing them down at noon, but write it down six times."

4. Write it one last time at night

"The fourth step is writing them down at night, but this time write them down nine times." Repeat steps 2-4 for 45 days.
