Inside the Unique Homes of 7 Ceramicists

Peek inside the creative worlds of pottery aficionados.

Although the art of pottery dates back as far as 29,000 years, ceramics continue to be commonplace in modern-day homes. The last few years in particular have seen a surge in the number of people practising the art of pottery and the amount of ceramics being featured in people's homes.

Ceramics add character and create a unique look within a home, and today's ceramicists are imbuing figurative forms with everyday function to create unique pieces that elevate a home's style tenfold.

We've stepped inside the homes and studios of a variety of ceramicists over the last couple of years, gaining valuable insight into their creative world. Each of the below seven homes is adorned with a unique aesthetic that's elevated by the artist's own ceramic works. They are sure to inspire you to incorporate some pottery into your home's interior decorating or to get creative and take up lessons.

1. Jessica Choi

Inspired by the fluidity of clay, ceramicist Jessica Choi's soft, earthy-toned pieces are equal parts delicate and strong, fluid and bold. These same traits are echoed throughout her renovated terrace home in Melbourne. The living area boasts a primarily neutral palette that's enlivened by a mint green rug and her sculptural creations sit on top of a curved stone coffee. The minimal bedroom fitted with Bed Threads sheets in Stripe and White gives the space a cloud-like relaxing feel.

2. Nicolette Johnson

It's easy to see Nicolette's artful eye at work in her home-meets-studio. This eclectic space is filled with secondhand and vintage pieces. It's home to a mix of fabrics, objets d'art, and art that has been bought from and swapped with other artists. The beautiful thing about Nicolette's residence is that it doesn't fit neatly into one specific style. It exudes a look and feel that is entirely individual and showcases her creative self wonderfully. The bedroom is clad in Oatmeal and Turmeric linen.

3. Tantri Mustika

Mustika has styled the interior of her Art Deco studio apartment carefully, making intelligent use of the apartment’s existing space. She installed a long table and bench, fitted specifically for the space and finished in black and white mosaic. In the bedroom, a cosy ochre-coloured couch slots perfectly along one wall, facing the bed – made with Bed Threads linen in Oatmeal and Terracotta. Along the mantelpiece, Mustika has arranged some of her enviable ceramics collection.

4. Teya Kepila

With comfort and self-expression at the centre of her design strategy, Kepila slowly decorated her studio apartment in Brooklyn with nature-inspired colours, carefully-selected secondhand furniture, and plenty of her hand-thrown ceramics. The finished product is equal parts studio and living space, complete with a pottery wheel and a cosy bed adorned in Bed Threads linen in Turmeric.

5. Maxine Midtbo

Maxine's decorating style is natural, earth-toned, and relaxed. There’s a mixture of modern and antique furniture in her home and studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as pieces she found on the street for free. Her favourite furniture item is her bedroom set, which was made from honey-hued wood by designer Milo Baughman for Lane Furniture – a gorgeous match for Bed Threads Olive and Oatmeal linen. 6. Natalie Rosin

Natalie Rosin and her partner Ben were initially drawn to their inner-city home because of its gorgeous light. Big windows and floor-to-ceiling glass doors flood the space with sunshine. That light is important, as is making sure that the space feels uniquely theirs. Rosin achieves that by scouring furniture auctions and secondhand stores for vintage pieces that reflect the couple’s tastes and personalities. Like their “retro” television and the wooden printer’s shelf in the entryway.

7. Caitlin Robson

Since moving into her Sydney home, Caitlin Robson has decorated the space with care and restraint, opting for a clean and minimal colour palette of whites, oatmeals, dark timber, and soft linen. In the bedroom, a combination of Bed Threads sheets in Oatmeal and White gives the space a cloud-like feel that is instantly relaxing. Everything is soft, clean and cosy.
