Bouclé Chairs Are the Cosiest Trend of 2020, Here Are 6 We Love

It's well-known that recent times have brought on a resurgence of comfort-focussed trends, from the nostalgia of vintage rattan to the touchable texture of the vintage velvet sofas in your Instagram feed. One trend that has surfaced in the past few years and become synonymous with cosy home déco in 2020? Bouclé.

Architectural Digest called it in February, reporting that textile houses were rounding out their bouclé offerings. As for the origins of the trend, they pointed to Finnish-American architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen's Womb Chair of 1948, which he designed upon the request of design revolutionary Florence Knoll—she wanted something that she could "really curl up in". Funny that, since the word "bouclé" is French for "loop". (The fabric is named as such because of the looping technique used to make it.)

French couture houses such as Chanel have championed bouclé for decades, while in home décor it is fabric offering a unique blend of sturdiness and softness.

"We are living in a time when comfort and safety are the utmost importance," designer Tina Ramchandani told AD. "With very real issues concerning the environment and political climate, days are hectic. So creating a safe and cozy space at home that encourages well-being is essential."

For just a touch of this trend, experiment with bouclé cushions or a single ottoman. But to go all out, look for the perfect armchair or sofa. As always, try your luck with vintage sellers on Instagram, or source a high-quality newly made bouclé creation.

Here are a few bouclé chairs and sofas we've encountered across Instagram, styled into the homes of our favourite influencers. Let them inspire you as you to up the comfort factor in your home décor and give you a few ideas on how to style the look in your own home.
