10 Best Netflix Movies And Series To Watch With Your Partner
1. Set It Up
Not all the romantic comedies on Netflix are made equal. Some of them are a little bit better than the others, and Set It Up is that film. One of the original romcoms to premiere on the streaming platform, it more than holds its own with some of the best films in the genre.
Starring Zoe Deutch and Glen Powell as two overworked assistants who hatch a plan to introduce their two domineering bosses – Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu, iconic – in order to give themselves a break, only to find love with each other, is a perfect movie for your romantic night in.
2. Always Be My Maybe
Another superior Netflix romcom, this film stars Ali Wong as a successful celebrity chef who returns to her home city to open a new restaurant, where she reconnects with her first love and childhood friend Marcus (Randall Park). The cast in this movie is incredible: Daniel Dae Kim and, um, Keanu Reeves also appear, with Reeves making a cameo as... himself. It has to be seen to be believed.
3. The Lovebirds
Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani star in this romcom - thriller, about a couple on their way to breaking up who somehow find themselves in the middle of a... murder mystery? This movie is so much fun: Rae and Nanjiani have great chemistry, the script is stuffed full of jokes, and the combination of genres makes this film the perfect thing to watch on your next date night.
4. Holidate
Nothing says date night like a cheesy romantic comedy, and they don’t come cheesier than Holidate. This Netflix movie stars Emma Roberts and Australian Luke Bracey as two singles who hitch their wagons together over the holiday season in order to avoid the prying questions of their families and friends. It’s a very silly movie, but it’s full of hijinx and jokes, and part of the joy of watching a romcom like this with your partner is poking fun at it, too. Enjoy!
5. Things Heard & Seen
Sometimes, what a date night calls for is a little jump scare – perfect for reaching over and grabbing your partner’s hand when it all gets a bit too spooky. This brand new Netflix movie, starring Amanda Seyfried and James Norton, is about a couple who move to a country cabin where all is most definitely not as it seems. It’s prestige horror done totally right, and is great for those winter movie nights when what you really want to do is get cosy next to your partner.
6. Love and Monsters
The title might not seem romantic-romantic, but this comedic zombie movie is that rarest of things: a tongue-in-cheek action film that also has a warm and cosy love story at its heart. Starring Dylan O’Brien and Jessica Henwick, and Oscar-nominated for its incredible visual effects – which were designed by an Australian-led team, extra points! – this movie is smart, sweet and a little bit silly, which all date night movies ought to be, if they possibly can.
7. Crash Landing On You
If you’re looking for a series to binge with your partner, try Crash Landing On You. This very popular Korean show follows a South Korean heiress who accidentally parachutes into North Korea, where she is discovered by a hunky soldier, who decides that he will help her out of her predicament. It’s really clever, really romantic and really watchable. Before you know it, you’ll have burned through all 16 episodes.
8. Lovesick
There are three seasons of this romantic comedy, which centres on Dylan (the incredible Johnny Flynn), a man who discovers that he has chlamydia and has to contact all his former partners to inform them of his predicament.
If you’re someone who fell in love with romcoms in the golden age of the genre – Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, basically – then you’ll love this show, which is rumpled around the edges and a bit of a loveable mess. There are three seasons, so it might seem overwhelming, but the episodes are only 20 minutes long, so you can really get into it quickly.
9. Summertime
It’s Italy, it’s summer, the sun is hot, the water is cold and everyone’s at it. This Netflix series is for everyone missing their European vacations. The first season, which premiered in 2019, follows two people from very different worlds who fall in love over one unforgettable Italian summer. A second season drops in June, and so you have plenty of time to binge the first lot before getting stuck into the second.
10. Love and Anarchy
Sometimes what you want on a date night is a weird, wacky and very sexy series – Something that will have you and your partner going... WTF? Love and Anarchy is exactly that, a Netflix show set in Sweden about a married mother of two who embarks on a flirtation – and maybe more – with a much younger colleague, after he walks in on her in a compromising position one night in the office.
This show is a little bizarre, but it definitely leaves you wanting more, even if the more that you want is more shots of star Ida Engvoll in her incredible millennial pink sweaters and wrap coats. Which is just as well, because a second season is coming this year.
