Love the ‘90s? Here’s How to Get the Iconic Era’s Aesthetic in Your Home

Are you craving a touch of nostalgia?

If ever there was a decade with staying power, it’s the ‘90s. It was an era that catapulted some of the most lasting cultural trends – from grunge and minimalism all the way to hip-hop. And while we tend to focus on the fashion looks that defined the 1990s, there are several other categories worth revisiting to help you channel the spirit of the decade, especially interior design.

If you grew up in the ‘90s, there are no doubt specific items that strike a nostalgic chord. Inflatable furniture, four-post beds, and beaded curtains, just to name a few. And while some of these accents don’t quite translate to a 2023 design aesthetic (or an adult home that is), there are still plenty of ways to imbue your home with the zeitgeist’s greatest hits.

Ahead, take a stroll down memory lane for some of the best interior design trends of the ‘90s and how you can incorporate them into your personal space.

Country Kitchen

As previously touched on, strong uses of wood was a reigning look of the ‘90s and this folds in nicely with a broader trend of the country kitchen. Throughout the decade, this design aesthetic grew in popularity with details like gingham patterns, high ceilings with wood beams, and a warm, earthy color palette.

Travertine

One of the chicest trends to come from the '90s was the use of travertine. This hardy, natural material was used for everything from coffee tables and trays to bathroom tiles and kitchen islands. Its natural beauty, durability, and versatility continue to attract homeowners, architects, and designers alike and it has had a resurgence in popularity in the last few years.
