These Are the Best Shows to Watch Based on Popular Series You Know and Love

We've got recommendations for those who love 'Succession', 'The White Lotus', 'Bridgerton', 'The Last of Us' and more.

We know the feeling of finishing a beloved television show well. You almost feel a little lost – what are you going to watch next? We’ve hit upon a foolproof trick though: searching for something that has the same energy as what we’ve just watched, to carry the feeling on and on.

Whether you're on the hunt for another romantic period piece because you loved Bridgerton or you're looking for more fish-out-of-water humour like in Ted Lasso, there's something to suit all tastes.

Here are a few of our suggestions based on popular TV shows we can't get enough of.

If you like Succession… Watch Industry

Where can I watch it? On Binge

Both shows are set in high-octane, high-flying worlds – in Succession, it’s the media; in Industry, it’s finance. Both shows feature characters that can be unlikeable, cruel or cold. And yet both shows make you root for these bad people all the same. It’s no surprise that Succession and Industry have a similar tone, as both are produced by the same network HBO and both aim to both capture and satirise the strata that they chronicle. We love them equally.

If you like Ted Lasso… Watch Shrinking

Where can I watch it? On AppleTV+

We could have made a myriad of suggestions for what to watch after bingeing Ted Lasso. For example – Made in Wrexham, for the soccer fans, or The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, for fish out of water humour. But we went with Shrinking for the very simple and undeniable reason that it has the same heart and tone as Ted Lasso. Both were created by the same team, which includes writer and actor Brett Goldstein (he plays the fabulous Roy Kent on Ted Lasso) and both are about kindness and compassion and learning to understand and process mental health. Shrinking has only just started on AppleTV+ this year and it’s worth a watch, not only because of its incredible cast that includes Jason Segel, Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams.

If you like Wednesday… Watch The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

Wednesday is one of our most favourite recent shows, and it’s a good reminder that Netflix has a great back catalogue of spooky, clever teen dramas, including one of their originals: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This reboot of a classic comic (and one-time television show) was so good, starring Kiernan Shipka as the eponymous teenage witch, and though it’s a little darker than Wednesday, they share a similar spirit.

If you like Stranger Things or The Last of Us… Watch Yellowjackets

Where can I watch it? On Paramount+

Spooky subject matter? Tick. Nostalgia factor? Tick. Incredible young actors? Tick. And even more incredible older cast, some of whom are bringing with them the baggage of their own days of youth stardom? Tick, tick, tick. Stranger Things, The Last of Us and Yellowjackets are drawn from the same cloth and both would make fantastic viewing partners for each other. Yellowjackets is set in split timelines as a group of high school girls are stranded on a mountain en route to a soccer match; in the present day, the surviving members start receiving threatening blackmail. The cast for this show is the true secret weapon: Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and more. We love it.

If you like The Handmaid’s Tale… Watch The Power

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

The Power is almost like a counteract to The Handmaid’s Tale: where the latter strips away the agency of its female characters in a dystopian world, The Power beefs it up. Following a group of young women who are mysteriously imbued with incredible superpowers, the show is about what would happen to a world where women were the dominant forces? Starring Toni Collette, the show launches on Prime Video at the end of the month.

If you like The White Lotus… Watch Big Little Lies

Where can I watch it? On Binge

If you like spending time with rich people on their worst behaviour – and if that was the reason that you got hooked on The White Lotus in the first place – it’s time to watch or re-watch Big Little Lies. You’ll get a brace of superstars (Reese! Nicole! Laura! Zoe! Shailene!), a beautiful location in Monterey and some of the worst behaviour you’ve ever seen. Both shows examine the strata of society and reveal its flaws.

If you like The Crown… Watch Marie Antoinette

Where can I watch it? On Binge

If you think you know the Marie Antoinette story, think again. This BBC series takes an unvarnished and detailed look at the life of the doomed French queen, following her from youth in Austria to the palace of Versailles. It has the kind of sumptuous production values that we all fell in love with in The Crown, as well as a peek behind the curtain at the real lives of royals.

If you like Bridgerton… Watch Harlots

Where can I watch it? On Stan

Not enough people watched Harlots when it was on television – now is your chance to catch up. It was the steamy precursor to Bridgerton, with a star-studded cast to boot, following the lives of the women caught up in the burgeoning world of sex workers in 18th Century London. Liv Tyler, Lesley Manville, Samantha Morton and Jessica Brown Findlay all starred in this show that ran for three seasons and was truly addictive.

If you like Emily In Paris… Watch Lupin

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

One word: Paris. If the beautiful city of light is what drew you to Emily In Paris (the clue is in the title!) then you need to watch Lupin next. This very charming crime caper follows a gentleman thief called Lupin, played by Omar Sy, who outsmarts all in his path.

If you like Only Murders In The Building… Watch Pokerface

Where can I watch it? On Stan

The murder mystery genre has been through a few shakeups recently, one of which has involved the addition of comedy. Only Murders In The Building has done a great job over two seasons (and counting) of making a sweet, silly show about solving murders, and if you enjoyed that might we suggest Pokerface? The just-released show airs on Stan and is created by Rian Johnson – the man behind the Knives Out franchise – and follows a woman played by Natasha Lyonne, who can tell whenever someone is lying. It’s a handy trick, given she keeps finding herself in situations where people die in mysterious circumstances, and nobody seems to care about solving the crime except for her. The supporting cast, which includes everyone from Adrien Brody to Chloe Sevigny, is pitch perfect.

If you love Daisy Jones & The Six... watch I’m Dying Up Here

Where can I watch it? Paramount+

Daisy Jones & The Six follows the rising stars of the music scene in the ‘70s; I’m Dying Up Here focuses its attention on stand-up comedians. A cast of up-and-comers hope to make it in the world of comedy and book a slot on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show via stellar turns on the stage of a comedy club in Los Angeles in this series, which was executive produced by Jim Carrey.
