12 Binge-Worthy Shows to Watch This June

You're reading our TV round-up for June 2020. Click here to find out which shows we watched in July. And click here to find out which shows everyone will be talking about in August.

Get cosy under your duvet cover or wrap yourself up in a blanket on the couch, because June is the best time to binge a television series. Luckily for you, this month there are a whole bunch of new TV shows dropping onto streaming platforms, all of which are crying out for you to lose a whole Sunday afternoon watching them.

There’s something for everyone: fizzy comedies, gritty crime dramas, gripping dramas, and moving documentaries. No matter what your viewing tastes, you’ll find something to obsess over this month. These are our favourites:

Little Fires Everywhere

Where to watch it? On Amazon Prime from 22 May

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Celeste Ng, this is set to be one of the most exciting book-to-TV adaptations of 2020. The series has been out on Hulu in the US since March and has drummed up quite a lot of buzz, so now it's our turn to play catch-ups. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, the drama is set in American suburbia, where a custody battle divides the town.

Ramy

Where to watch it? On Stan from 29 May

Did you catch season one of Ramy on Stan last year? Maybe you didn’t. It’s true that he comedy flew a bit under the radar… until its star Ramy Roussef won a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Actor in January. Now, season two could not be more hyped, and it’s dropping onto the streaming platform on 29 May. Catch up on the first season now and you’ll be rewarded: this insightful and insanely smart comedy will also co-star Mahershala Ali – yes, the two-time Oscar-winning star of Moonlight and Green Book – in a supporting role. Under the radar no longer.

Space Force

Where to watch it? On Netflix from 29 May

Steve Carrell and Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office, are a match made in heaven. Throw in a Netflix-sized budget and a stacked cast of comedy heavy hitters (John Malkovich! Diana Silvers! Ben Schwartz! Lisa Kudrow!) and you have all the makings of a hit. Space Force, dropping on Netflix at the very end of May, is a workplace comedy about a group of civil servants looking to set up an arm of the American military… in space. Basically it’s The Office, mixed in with Parks and Recreation and a little dash of… Star Trek? Honestly, there’s nothing quite like it on television, and we could certainly use the laughs right now.

Queer Eye

Where to watch it? On Netflix from 5 June

The boys are back in town! The Fab Five’s fifth season is dropping onto Netflix on 5 June, which is exactly what we need to get us through isolation. This time around, Antoni, Karamo, Bobby, JVN, and Tan are setting up shop in Philadelphia, where they will help a new crop of heroes achieve the confidence and self-love that they need in order to conquer their world. We’re already in our feelings about this.

Dear…

Where to watch it? On AppleTV+ from 5 June

Ever wanted to know more about the lives of Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and… Big Bird, among others? This AppleTV+ documentary is for you. The docuseries will profile fascinating names in the world of entertainment, activism, and sport (Aly Raisman and Misty Copeland are two of the athletes involved), shedding light on their achievements and their setbacks, their inspirations and their goals, but with a twist. Each episode will be told through letters – hence the title ‘Dear…’ – written to each of these incredible figures.

Lenox Hill

Where to watch it? On Netflix from 10 June

Lenox Hill, nestled to the side of Central Park in New York’s Upper East Side, is one of the most respected hospitals in America, and this Netflix docuseries will give viewers an unprecedented look inside the building. Following four doctors, and the patients that they treat at the hospital, the series will follow the highs and lows of practicing medicine and the impact of difficult cases on both patient and doctor. If you’re a devotee of medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy or The Good Doctor, this could be the docuseries for you.

The Bold Type

Where to watch it? On Stan from 11 June

Fans of The Bold Type, rejoice! Season four of this fizzy and delicious series set in the offices of a glossy magazine is dropping onto Stan in the middle of June. You know the drill: Jane, Sutton and Kat, three of the staffers at Scarlet Magazine, will be back for more drama, fashion cupboard gossip and workplace antics. What’s new? Jacqueline is no longer editor-in-chief and Jane and Ryan’s relationship is on the rocks.

Dads

Where to watch it? On AppleTV+ from 19 June

Bryce Dallas Howard, actor and director – you’ll know her from the Jurassic World franchise, or her villainous turn in The Help – is the force behind this moving and emotional documentary about modern-day fatherhood, streaming on AppleTV+ from 19 June. The actor looks not only at her relationship with her famous father, director Ron Howard, but interviews a bunch of big names – Will Smith, Jimmy Kimmel, Neil Patrick Harris, Patton Oswalt – about their own views on fatherhood, too. The result is a loving ode to dads that will make you reach for the tissues. Trust us: this one is a real tearjerker.

LOL: Last One Laughing

Where to watch it? On Amazon Prime Video from 19 June

This reality series, fronted by Rebel Wilson, is the first Amazon Prime Video to be made in Australia. The premise is simple: A bunch of our finest comedians battle it out to make each other laugh, and the last one to crack will take home the prize. If you’ve been missing live comedy, get ready to laugh along at home.

Yellowstone

Where to watch it? On Stan from 22 June

Already a hugely popular series in the US, Yellowstone is starting to pick up steam in Australia, just in time for the third season to drop onto Stan at the end of June. So, what’s it about? Basically it follows the Duttons, a family that own a massive and lucrative cattle ranch in the heart of Montana. Led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the family struggles to maintain control of their property and their fortune in this changing world. It’s a modern-day Western, which is not a genre we’re usually a fan of, but the family dynamics in this series are what make it worth watching. If you like Succession, and all the family backstabbing that goes on in it, you’ll like Yellowstone.

Perry Mason

Where to watch it? On Foxtel’s Showcase from 22 June

In the ‘50s, Perry Mason was a popular television character, a Los Angeles lawyer who would do whatever it took to save the lives of his clients. This month, he’s back in a gritty HBO reboot, led by Matthew Rhys – you’ll know him from The Americans, or the Fred Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood – and co-starring Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black). The setting this time around is still Los Angeles, but the year is 1932 and the city’s mean streets are full of private eyes and tabloid reporters looking to splash the secrets of a burgeoning Hollywood. In other words, it’s the perfect setting for a down-and-out lawyer to claw his way back to the top. This television show is going to be huge.

Athlete A

Where to watch it? On Netflix from 24 June

In 2017, the world was rocked by allegations of abuse in the American gymnastics community. The perpetrator? Doctor Larry Nassar, who had run the medical program for USA Gymnastics for years. The victims? Some 332 young women, including some of the team’s biggest names: Simone Biles, Gaby Douglas, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney. In the eventual court case, Nassar pleaded guilty and was sentenced to between 40 and 175 years in prison. The story of these shocking crimes, and the impact on the American gymnastics community, will be told in Athlete A, a gripping and harrowing documentary streaming on Netflix at the end of June.
