A Minimalist’s Guide to Holiday Home Decor
Embrace serene simplicity this holiday season.
It’s the most beautiful time of the year, the weather is starting to warm up, we’re slowly transitioning into holiday mode, and the festive season is well and truly upon us.
For many, the holiday season is one of the best times of the year, bright lights adorn the streets and trees, front doors and entryways to homes don ornamental wreaths, and decor is swapped out with festive curios to reflect the festive spirit. However, for those whose homes emanate a more minimalist aesthetic, the holiday season is somewhat of a challenge.
With gifts and guests entering your home, it can be hard to keep it feeling clutter-free. So for minimalists who want to embrace holiday decor without overwhelming their living space, read ahead for a minimalist's guide to holiday home decor.
1. Don’t go overboard with colour
The holiday season is synonymous with bold pops of colour – the antithesis of minimalist decor. If you want to keep your home feeling peaceful and chic while still alive with festive spirit, try to stick to decorations in neutral tones or in one colour only.
2. Less is more
The 'less is more rule' applies to most things in life, but even more so when it comes to minimalist decor. Try not to clutter areas of your home which would otherwise be bare. If you decide to add a piece of festive decor to an area of your home, try taking a piece away that’s already there.
3. Spread things out
While we’re on the topic of clutter, try to keep your decor spaced out so your home still feels minimal. Having negative space between festive curios will keep the space feeling peaceful and de-cluttered.
4. Keep things natural
Try to source natural materials such as dried branches and leaves, citrus fruit for dried garlands, and a real tree to display in your living room. Decorating your space with natural materials instead of artificial decor will keep your home feeling lively without overwhelming the space.
5. Decorate what you have
From mantelpieces to houseplants, your home is full of countless places which can easily be spruced up with lights or ornaments to get your home into the festive spirit. Just make sure you don't go overboard with the decorating – the smallest changes will have the biggest impact.
6. Avoid coloured lights
As much as we love checking out the holiday light displays every year, we don’t want the inside of our homes looking the same way. When it comes to selecting festive lights for your home, avoid coloured bulbs and opt for soft, warm lighting, and candles to create a cosy ambience.
