The swipe of the key card, the drop of the bags and finally the chance to collapse on a clean, comfortable bed that must surely be better than our own if we paid this much for it. Truth be told: achieving hotel style in your own space doesn't need to be expensive. Below, we unpack nine tips to transform your own bedroom in luxury hotel style without leaving home – or overspending.

2. Perfect the pillow pile up

When it comes to luxury hotel trimmings, pillows make all the difference. Think more is more – a stack of pillows in different shapes and sizes will promote a sense of luxury and opulence, and also make for easy accessorising in the bedroom.

3. Attempt your own turndown service

Decluttering your space, dimming the lights, putting on calming music and using a subtle room spray can add a sensory cue that it’s time to wind down. Prep the bed by turning back the duvet about halfway, fluff pillows and smooth out creases in the sheets for a hotel-like finish. If you're feeling extra, add a touch of luxury in the lead up to bed time by placing a book, sleep mask, or even a chocolate or herbal tea sachet to your nightstand and lay out your pyjamas or robe neatly on the bed – it’s a small gesture that signals comfort and care.

4. Adjust your lighting

The staples of any hotel bedroom, lamps and sconces are the luxurious yet affordable bedfellows readily available to us at home. Consider your choice of bulb colour carefully – the warmer the better – and opt for an alternative with a lower wattage. Placed or hung by either bedside, these can ease the brain to sleep and still help you to navigate to your bathroom without having to switch on all of the lights. Where possible, avoid blue light – this will disrupt the body’s circadian rhythms much like our technology devices – and consider alternatives like LED.

5. Care less about thread counts

In spite of what many people think, sheets with a high thread count of 300 or more aren't intrinsically more luxurious. Consider opting for organic cotton bedding in a 200 thread count percale weave. This is the optimum construction for air circulation as the threads are woven loose enough to feel light and breathable but still ultra-smooth and soft. Higher thread counts often indicate a less breathable fabric with more threads densely woven in a thicker, sturdier fabric.

Alternatively, choose linen bed sheets that don’t have a thread count at all. French flax linen uses GSM or grams per square metre which indicates the material’s weight.
