Of All The Podcasts We Listened to This Month, These Were the Most Intriguing

Whether you enjoy listening on your commute, on a run, or while you're doing chores, it's safe to say that podcasts are the entertainment medium of choice for busy millennial women.

But sifting through the onslaught of new podcasts that pop up every week is a little daunting, and it can be pretty hard to discern which ones are truly worthy of our time. Below, we've compiled a list of 9 fresh podcasts that are as intriguing as they are entertaining. Happy listening.

1. The Clearing

Ever wonder what it would be like to have a father locked up for murder? No, neither did we, and this true crime podcast delves into this exact scenario.

The Clearing explores the case of convicted American serial killer Edward Wayne Edwards and tells the story from an interesting perspective—that of his daughter April. Host John Dean digs back into April's childhood and investigates the dramatic and insidious ways her father's heinous crimes have shaped and permeated her life.

2. Bobo and Flex

Spirituality, feminism, racism, friendships, and dating are all up for discussion in this hilarious podcast by New York-based philosopher Bobo Matjila and Sydney-based personality Flex Mami.

While episode topics such as 'how to live fully before the world ends' might seem hard-hitting, they broach these intellectual debates with dark humour and personal anecdotes. They have a highly engaged community of listeners and followers, and we bet you'll be one of them, too, after a few listens.

3. True Crime Conversations

Produced by Mamamia, host Jessie Stephens uncovers a different Australian true crime story per episode. The gory tales unfold as she interviews people close to the case, from investigative journalists, authors, historians, and policemen.

It's an interesting take on the true crime genre, and each episode will have you spellbound (ear-bound?) the entire way through.

4. The Daily

Delve into the biggest news stories of the day via 20-minute episodes, designed for your morning commute. Produced by The New York Times, they're extremely well-researched breakdowns of some of the most important issues in America, and are a great place to start if you're trying to learn more about US politics.

Start with episodes on 'How the Democratic Debates Narrow the Field',  'The Economy is Booming. Or Is It?' and 'The Making of Boris Johnson', for a taste of the series.

5. Love etc.

If you're a fan of pop culture podcast Shameless, this one's for you. Hosts Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews produce weekly episodes on all things love, dating, relationships in partnership with Bumble Australia.

They dissect and discuss everything from red flags, dealing with break ups, and the concept of settling, with nuance and intelligent insights. While every episode is worth your time, we recommend starting with the one on cheating, where we hear from three different women about their experiences with infidelity. It's juicy stuff.

6. Tiddas 4 Tiddas

Tiddas 4 Tiddas started as an Instagram account run by Kamilaroi sisters Marlee and Keely Silva to share stories of Indigenous female excellence. Since growing to 14K followers, they've teamed up with Mamamia to create a weekly podcast series.

Host Marlee Silva interviews Indigenous women from many different backgrounds—from actor Leah Purcell to app founder Barbie-Lee Kirby and social justice warrior Dr. June Oscarand their stories are rich, honest, inspiring and often heartbreaking. Prepare to laugh and cry—sometimes in a matter of minutes.

7. Lady-land

There's a growingand welcomeinflux of female-founded businesses in Australia and across the globe, and in this fortnightly podcast we get to hear how they began. The hosts interview a different female founder in each episode and discuss the nitty gritty of building a business.

From Sara Crampton of The Undone, to Julie Stevanja of Stylerunner and Gemma Watts of Glow Journal, each woman has an interesting story to share, and you just might be inspired to start that side-hustle you've been contemplating after listening.

8. Nowhere Child

The name William Tyrrell is one every Australian is familiar with, for a chilling reason. The three-year-old went missing from his home on NSW's mid-north coast in 2014, and his disappearance has never been solved.

Hosted by The Australian's Caroline Overington, this weekly podcast investigates the falsehoods spread by the media, and delves into the circumstances surrounding the case.

9. She's On The Money

Getting ahead financially can be hard. Especially when you actually don't know where to begin. This money-focused podcast will teach you about investing, saving and tax through a thoroughly modern lens.

Hosted by finance expert Victoria Devine, this podcast talks about money in an entertaining and real way that even the most financially-inept can understand, through interviews with, and questions from, real-life Australian women.
