We Are Officially OEKO-TEX 100 Certified – Here's What It Means for You

We explain the global standard that proves our fabrics are environmentally friendly and safe for you to sleep and live in.

At Bed Threads, we're committed to continually reducing our environmental footprint. It's one of the reasons we chose to produce our buttery soft threads in 100% French flax linen, it being a fabric that needs less water and fewer pesticides to cultivate than others typically used to make manchester.

In addition, our 100% French Flax Linen has been awarded the Standard 100 certification from internationally-recognised textile testing company OEKO-TEX (aka the Zürich-based International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile and Leather Ecology).

What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification?

When a fabric is awarded a Standard 100 certification it means that it has been tested by OEKO-TEX for harmful substances such as formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, nickel and more, and declared safe for human use. The certification is voluntary, meaning companies cannot pay to receive Standard 100 certification, and both the certification and the testing criteria are updated annually.

Because we have been officially certified by OEKO-TEX, you can be confident that every single thread, button and fibre in our 100% French flax linen has been tested for over 100 harmful chemicals and substances.

OEKO-TEX has a range of worldwide standards with which it assesses fabrics to ensure that they're non-toxic to customers and are constantly updating them with new scientific knowledge that arises and with evolving requirements in the industry. There are more than 14,000 companies who have been certified by OEKO-TEX's Standard 100, forming a network of brands that share our commitment to providing customers with the safest possible products. You can check the validity of OEKO-TEX labels at any time by simply entering the label number into the OEKO-TEX Label Check. If you'd like to find other brands that are also certified, you can search for them here.

Why is OEKO-TEX 100 certification important?

An OEKO-TEX 100 certification enables consumers to make responsible and ethical decisions that protect our planet and ensures products are manufactured in a fair way.

Textiles should never affect your health, and an OEKO-TEX 100 certification is a guarantee of quality and safety. Given you spend most of your time wrapped in fabrics, be it in bed or your day-to-day clothing, it's comforting to know that you can guarantee your textiles are clean and safe.

With so much greenwashing out there these days, we are committed to being transparent about our manufacturing practices.

How else is Bed Threads practicing responsibility?

Bed Threads is proudly carbon neutral, which means that we measure, reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions where possible, doing our bit to protect and conserve the environment. Whenever you shop with us, you can also rest assured that our packaging is proudly eco-friendly.

In what ways is linen an eco-friendly material?

Not only is linen one of these most luxurious and stylish fabrics, but it's also one of the most eco-friendly. Made from flax plant fibres this strong material is resilient and can grow in poor soil, using significantly less water during production than cotton or polyester. The entire flax plant can be used.

Linen is also biodegradable (only when eco-friendly dyes like the ones used Bed Threads), meaning it won't rot in landfill, and naturally moth resistant.
