Don’t Have a Heater? Here’s 7 Ways to Keep Your Bedroom Toasty at Night
Beat the winter chill while also keeping your bills down.
Heating your home in winter can be an expensive undertaking. The days are shorter and colder so you're likely going to use heaters and lights more often. And If there's one room we prioritise to keep cosy and warm when the weather cools down, it's our bedroom.
Whether it's because you want to save on bills or because you don't have a central heating system in your home, you'll be pleased to know there are ways to bring warmth to your bedroom that don't involve a hefty fee.
Below, find seven simple hacks that will instantly warm up your bedroom without using a heating system.
1. Lay down a rug
If you have wood or tiled flooring, a cosy rug is essential. Not only does it tie the design together, but rugs also make a space feel cosy and lived in (as opposed to unfinished and cold). This is an especially important consideration in a bedroom — who wants to wake up and step onto freezing cold tiles or floorboards first thing in the morning?
No matter what style you choose, make sure you select the right size – at the very least, the bottom two legs of your bed frame should sit comfortably on the rug. If you really want to cosy up the space, invest in an even larger rug that sits below your entire bed and nightstands.
2. Get an electric blanket
Having an electric blanket to switch on before bedtime is a gamechanger. If you want to cut down on spending, turn your blanket on half an hour before bed and then switch it off when you get all tucked in rather than leaving it on for longer periods of time. You can pick up one for as little as $40 to keep you extra toasty warm this winter.
3. Layer with a quilt or throw
If you're prone to getting chilly during the night, you might want to consider adding a linen quilted bed cover or throw to your bedding. Linen is temperature-regulating, which means that it takes its cues to what’s going on both on your body and in the air around you and adjusts its heat accordingly.
4. Up the insulation
You don't need to rip apart your walls and install more effective insulation to keep your bedroom cosy. Instead:
- Consider installing heavier drapes to trap the chill coming via your windows.
- Use door snakes to stop any drafts coming through gaps under doors and skirting boards.
- Lay down a rug.
5. Make sure your windows are well sealed
To prevent cold drafts from coming into your space, you should check the condition of your window seals. If you see gaps or can feel air coming through, you'll need to head to your local hardware store to collect caulk or weatherstripping and get DIY-ing!
6. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan
It might sound like an odd one, but did you know reversing the direction of your ceiling fan can help warm your room in winter? Because warm air rises, changing the direction of the blades to go clockwise pushes the air down and circulates it throughout the room.
7. Strategic furniture placement
If your bed is currently against an exterior wall, it might be worth considering moving its placement. This will help prevent heat loss to the colder outside air.
