Every year, there are a few hues that dominate the world of design and colour our lives. Magenta and pale yellow have ruled 2023, reflecting the current cultural climate. The hot pink trend has roots in the playful Barbie phenomenon as well as Pantone's 2023 Colour of the Year, 'Viva Magenta', while lemon tones reflect the yearning for relaxed European summer holidays in the Mediterranean.

So, what's in store for 2024? We're calling it now, the colour du jour will be paprika; a rich, retro, orange-red hue – and we're obsessed.

Here's why we think 'Paprika' will be coming in hot next year and will be the 'it' colour of 2024.

2024: The year of Paprika

We look at various factors, including market trends, brand identity, and, of course, what we think our community will love. Over the past year or so, we've been drawn to a specific orange-red shade that evokes images of Mediterranean beach umbrellas, the Australian outback, and the '70s.

The latter is an aesthetic that's been unavoidable for the past few years, and 2024 will continue to lean into the nostalgic, retro vibe with orange and red tones coming in hot.

Leading Paint brand Dulux’s 2024 ‘Muse palette’ features a line-up of deep midtone colours “heavily influenced by the nostalgia of the postmodern era, with a particular emphasis on the '70s.” One such colour is ‘Fluorescent Fire’; an orange-based red paint set to add a dynamic and uplifting touch to any space, infusing it with energy and warmth.

In both Pantone’s London and New York Fashion Week Spring 2024 top 10 colours, red and orange tones prevailed. From ‘Fiesta’, a fiery paprika tone, to ‘Roobios Tea’, a full-bodied red with brown undertones, these warm hues stole the show.

In paint brand Haymes’ 2024 ‘Retro Mashup’ palette, the vibrant orange colour ‘Silken’ is set to feed energy and warmth into a space.

The paprika shade evokes sentiments of nostalgia, warmth, and self-expression, encouraging us to have fun and be playful with our homes.

How to use paprika in your home
