10 New TV Shows Hitting Screens This May

From author Judy Bloom’s 'Forever' adapted for the screen to Charli XCX guest starring in Benito Skinner's buzzed about comedy series 'Overcompensating', these are the best new TV shows to check out in May.

Which month will host the best new TV shows to stream? It’s gonna be May.

Yep, the month of Justin Timberlake memes is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a list of the best new series to sink your eyes into?

For those raised by the lessons of Lena, there’s new comedy series Adults, dubbed the ‘Post-Girls show we didn’t know we needed’, or for students of Sex and the City, how about a season 3 of spin-off series And Just Like That...? Have a stressful family dynamic you’d love to see explored on screen? Twisted sibling thriller The Better Sister gets deep into the drama. Ever wondered what Charlie XCX’s acting chops are like? Look no further than Benito Skinner’s dramedy, Overcompensating, about a closeted jock living a chaotic frat boy life. Throw in an adaptation of Judy Bloom’s Forever alongside new dark-comedy show Sirens starring Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon, and you’re in for some seriously good TV shows this month.

1. Adults

Where Can I watch it? On Disney+

Created by comedian couple Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, Adults is the post-Girls series we’ve been searching for. Stacked with new-gen talent including Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele, Adults follows a group of friends in their twenties as they try to forge a future for themselves in New York. From throwing a dinner party to navigating the maze of stress that is the American healthcare system, these five friends try to get it together without falling apart. Also, fun (rhyming) cameo alert – keep your eyes peeled for Charlie Cox and Julia Fox!

2. And Just Like That… Season 3

Where Can I watch it? On Max

You either love it or you hate it, but as the ratings continue to prove, you’re gonna watch it either way. Sex and the City’s somewhat divisive spinoff series is back for a third season, though two previous characters didn’t get the memo. Of course Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte will return with fresh wardrobes, but controversial comedian Che Diaz and Nya Wallace will not. But as one door closes, another opens, and walking though it are none other than new recruits Rosie O’Donnell, Patti LuPone, and Logan Marshall-Green, to name but a few.

3. Duster

Where Can I Watch it? On Max

Deriving its name from the Plymouth Duster Coupe driven by fearless getaway driver Jim (played by Lost’s Josh Holloway), Duster is a retro crime thriller set in the early 70s Southwest. Recruited by the FBI’s first Black female agent, Nina (played by This is Us’ Rachel Hilson), Jim joins the mission to take down a growing crime syndicate when a young and impatient agent bursts onto the scene and turns things (and cars) upside down. Created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, Duster is eight-episodes full of high-octane energy.

4. Forever

Where Can I Watch it? On Netflix

Judy Bloom’s coming-of-age novel, Forever, created quite the stir upon its release in 1975 thanks to its raw portrayal of young romance and teen sexuality. In Mara Brock Akil’s series adaptation of the best-selling story, young Black love takes centre stage as Justin and Keisha navigate all the firsts that come with your first love, set to the backdrop of 2018 Los Angeles. Regina King also serves as executive producer as well as director on the first ep, and you just know she’ll kick things off right.

5. The Four Seasons

Where Can I Watch it? On Netflix

With a cast that includes Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Marco Calvani, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Erika Henningsen, and Kerri Kenney-Silver, what could go wrong? Heaps, as it turns out. An adaptation of Alan Alda’s 1981 classic rom-com of the same name, Four Seasons follows three couples over eight episodes as their seasonal vacation tradition goes from fun to from hell when one of the couples splits and a new, much younger +1 checks in.

6. Murderbot

Where Can I Watch it? On Apple TV+

Alexander Skarsgård alert! Our favourite yet oft villainous swede stars as “a self-hacking security android” in Sci-fi comedic thriller, Murderbot. Over 10 action-packed episodes, Apple TV’s adaptation of Martha Wells’ hit book series The Murderbot Diaries follows Skarsgård, AKA Murderbot, who is both repulsed by human emotion yet drawn to vulnerability. Tasked with dangerous missions and hiding its free will, Murderbot is accompanied by a cast that includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, and Tattiawna Jones.

7. Overcompensating

Where Can I Watch it? On Prime

Born Benito Skinner but known by his internet ID Benny Drama, the comedian, actor, and celebrity impressionist brings his sketch comedy show to life on screen. Guest starring Charlie XCX (who also produces original music for the series), Overcompensating is a college-set comedy following Benny, a closeted football player and homecoming king who befriends an outsider named Carmen, desperate to fit in. Together, they navigate toxic masculinity, sexuality, and fake identities (both literally and figuratively).

8. Sirens

Where Can I Watch it? On Netflix

Based on Maid creator Molly Smith Metzler’s play named Elemeno Pea, Netflix’s new dark comedy series Sirens takes sisterly concern to new heights. Over five-episodes, the series follows Devon (played by White Lotus’ Meghann Fahy) as she becomes increasingly unsettled by her sister Simone’s relationship with her new boss, Michaela Kell (played by the inimitable Julianne Moore). Taking place over a tumultuous weekend at Michaela’s luxe beach estate, Devon attempts an intervention before her sis (Milly Alcock) sells her soul to the cult of Michaela. A satire-soaked reflection on women, power and class, Sirens also stars Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton.

9. The Better Sister

Where Can I Watch it? On Prime

Calling this series a ‘relatable crime drama’ might raise some eyebrows (and fairly enough, some legal questions too), but here we are. Based on Alafair Burke’s 2019 novel of the same name, this family thriller stars Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks as estranged sisters Chloe and Nicky, who are brought back together by the brutal murder of Chloe’s husband. A gripping story about family feuds and forgiveness unravels over eight captivating episodes, uncovering long buried secrets along the way.

10. The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2

Where Can I Watch it? On Apple TV+

The first sequel to The Walking Dead series and the fifth series in The Walking Dead franchise, Dead City follows OG characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) through the flesh-eating streets of post-apocalyptic NYC.

Season 1 saw the death-defying duo forced to form somewhat of a friendship to stay alive, but that was before Maggie’s jaw-dropping decision left us dangling over a proverbial cliff in the finale. Season 2 promises more wild walkers and brutal battles, alongside a new iteration of Negan’s iconic barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat affectionately named Lucille.
