Chantel Mila’s Favourite DIY Cleaning Products for a Sparkling Home

They're inexpensive and do the job.

Having a nice clean home is one of life's simple pleasures. From a boost in self-esteem from completing the job to having a tidy space where there are fewer places for germs and bacteria to hide, giving your home a good clean comes with benefits for your brain and well-being.

Cleaning your home is a skill, and knowing how to make your own cleaning products can be significantly cheaper than purchasing commercial alternatives while doing just as good a job.

Below, we chat with CleanTok guru Chantel Mila about the effective DIY cleaning products that she swears by for gleaming results.

What are the benefits of making your own cleaning products at home?

Making your own cleaning products has so many benefits and there’s so much to love! Many of my DIY cleaning products use inexpensive pantry items like white vinegar, baking soda, dishwashing liquid, and lemons and are eco-friendly, budget-friendly, and low-tox ways of cleaning the home. With two young children, it’s so important to have safer alternatives when cleaning around them, especially since my daughter is prone to asthma. And at the end of the day, they also leave our home smelling amazing and sparkling clean!

Can you please share some of the at-home cleaning products you make and how you make them?

My top two favourite DIY cleaning products are my DIY fridge spray and DIY bathroom spray. These two sprays are so effective at cutting through grime and in my opinion work so much better than store-bought alternatives.

Are there any cleaning products you think you absolutely should just buy?

When taking care of clothes or linens, an eco-friendly laundry detergent is a must. High-concentrate laundry detergents also mean that you can use a very small amount (about 2 teaspoons for a full load!) and they can work so well to remove stains and odours on your linens. I’ve played around with DIY laundry detergents but found that’s one item that is worth purchasing.
