Inside Aimee Winchester's Modern Farmhouse-Style Home

The mother of five has created a dreamy family home in Byron.

Welcome to The Makers. Each week, we’re celebrating innovators, artisans, and crafters of all types, taking you on a private tour of their creative spaces. For this instalment, we tour sleepwear label founder and mother Aimee Winchester's weatherboard home in Bangalow.

Being a mum is no mean feat, and for mother of five Aimee Winchester, it's a role she relishes and has afforded her plenty of opportunities. Aimee is perhaps best known for her Instagram account @little.winnie where she shares aesthetic glimpses into her family life and offers her loyal followers plenty of home design inspiration and delicious food ideas.

Having children inspired her to create boutique children’s label, Little Winnie, which produced sleepwear and basics made from organic natural fibres. "...after I had the girls I had a strong calling to design and create basics for them that were simple, timeless, and made from natural fibres," she shares with Bed Threads Journal. She's currently in the midst of relaunching the brand after taking a short hiatus to focus on motherhood – stay tuned!

In an ideal world, a large family calls for a large home, and Aimee realised her vision of contemporary family living with the creation of her modern farmhouse-style abode in Bangalow. The fresh white exterior of the newly built weatherboard home gives visitors an idea of what to expect inside – a light-filled, airy haven with plenty of room for family and friends.

The interior of the home has a decidedly calm vibe to it with its pared-back furnishings and dialled-down colour palette – the perfect antidote to a busy household. Each room delivers lashings of elegance and functionality for the young family. The farm-style kitchen is an entertainer's dream with soaring ceilings and an abundance of space not only for cooking but for the family to hang out in. Here, beautiful sage-toned joinery brings subtle colour into the space.

Each of the three children's rooms is sophisticated yet playful with subtle pops of pastel hues in Sage, Oatmeal, Mineral, and Lavender. The primary bedroom embraces Olive and Sage linen with the former extending to the luxurious main bathroom that features a clawfoot bath.

All in all, the home wholeheartedly achieves Aimee's vision of a family space that's "clean and minimal but warm and homely."

Hi Aimee! This series is called The Makers. What is it that you make?

I make sleepwear and basics. Although since I had my 5th daughter I have taken time away to focus on my family life. I am currently working on a new range!

How does the act of “making” relate to your personality and who you are?

After I had my children I really loved the feeling of dressing my kids in nostalgic simple clothing. I began working on designs and that felt so good knowing I could create clothing that was made from organic natural fibres and was also super cute!

Tell us about your career journey to date. Did you always know you wanted to pursue this line of work?

I never imagined I would own a sleepwear brand, but as I mentioned after I had the girls I had a strong calling to design and create basics for them that were simple, timeless, and made from natural fibres.

Talk us through your creative process. Where do you start?

I sent my designs to India and had some samples made up and the rest is history!

What’s been the single most crucial tool or strategy you’ve used to further your career?

Work from a place of love and passion!

What’s been the best thing that’s happened to you since you started your career?

The whole process from start to finish is so rewarding but seeing my girls in the clothing is priceless.

Do you have a single piece of advice you’d give to your younger self or someone looking to pursue a similar line of work?

Believe in yourself and your work and keep pushing until it’s achieved.

Now, the home stuff. How long have you lived in your home?

We moved in last Christmas - so about 8 months

How did you initially know this was the space for you?

We designed and built it so it’s exactly what we wanted!

Did you do any renovations or make any big changes after moving in?

We moved in while it was about 80% finished, so continued working on the 20% we needed to get done.

Which is your favourite room in the house?

My kitchen!

What are your top tips for a well-styled bedroom, and home generally?

Beautiful linen of course. Have beautiful things on display that ideally you have collected over time and bring you joy. Keep it clean and minimal but warm and homely.

Do you have any projects coming up you want to talk about?

I am excited to relaunch my sleepwear and basics brand. It will have a new name and some beautiful new pieces that I am excited about.
